One of the famous beach resorts is the Boracay Island which naturally attracts tourists from all over the world. Just last year the Paradise Island, as it is called, has recorded 650,000 visitors. The island has become an extra boost to the country's tourism. Needless to say, it gets a huge positive response from the people regardless of culture and personal background.

I have always loved the beach. The smell of the salty water, the wind in my face, the gentle roar of the waves all combine to create a sense of peace and calm. At the beach, life is different. Time doesn't move hour to hour but mood to moment. We live by the currents, plan by the tides and follow the sun.

There are many means to reach the island. From Manila the boat travel will last for 3 hours or you can book for a flight from Manila to Kalibo Airport, ride on a bus for two hours and then another 35 minutes by boat in order to reach the white-sand beach resort. On your first step in the island you will be captivated with the nature's beauty in forming perfect landscapes. The hotels and other establishments with world class facilities and amenities have added to the beauty of the island especially on night time where lights come from flickering bulbs and torches along the coast.

You can do a lot of things to enjoy your summer vacation in Boracay beach resort. Aside from the activities and services provided by the hotels like spa and yogas, you can also enjoy scuba diving with a scenic underwater adventure, kite boarding with the beautiful island's contour underneath and island cruising with the breathtaking clear water encounter and experience. The night life in Boracay has also been admired with live bands and performers all over the place and food services open all day long. Apart from all of these, it is the residents of Boracay who are known for their sweet-tone voice and warm accommodation that make visitors come back. When people ask me "Where can I go that has a great beach, sun, a good night life, lots of activities, and is safe, but not too far from Korea?" My one word answer is immediately... Boracay!

This was a candid moment taken few months back.... accidentally found it when I was searching through my hardrive. Thought I'd post this since the colors are quite nice.Location: Boracay Beach, Philippines

Boracay is a tropical island that is only a one-hour flight from Manila. The island has more than 30 beaches, foremost of which is a four-kilometer stretch of pure white sand called White Beach. White Beach is widely considered by international travel publications to be among the world's best beaches.

But this is only part of the story. Boracay has a special appeal for a foreigner's idea of relaxation. No cars, no fast food chains, no high rises and no crime.

Despite it's rapid expansion of the last decade, Boracay is still primarily made up of nipa huts. "Nipa" refers to the style of thatched roof endemic to The Philippines. These cozy cottages are scattered about the island’s beaches amid a decorative lineup of simple paraws, the Filipino outrigger, anchored along its shore. Wind sailing, para-sailing, scuba diving and daily boat rides to dozens of picturesque nooks, provide the adventurous with many options to fill their days.

For the avid golfer, Boracay also has a very beautiful 18-hole Par 72 World-Class Golf Course which inspires another kind of challenge, assuring players of a stimulating golf experience as well as a tough test to one's skills. Master golfer and designer Graham V. Marsh himself designed the course.

But there's more. An impressive array of international cuisine at rock bottom prices lures European, Australian, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese vacationers here annually. Take for example the "Mongolian Buffet" in which the customer chooses from a collection of noodles, meat, seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables, and dozens of sauces, places their choice in a bowl and hands it to the chef who stir fries your original mish mash creation and serves it up a few minutes later. Cost? 350 pesos or about 6,000 won. No sales tax either in Boracay, but a small tip is considered to be good manners.

Accommodations range in price from 20,000 won to 200,000 won per day depending on your needs. I stayed at the "Paradise Garden," which is located on 2.5 acres on landscaped tropical jungle. Each cottage has bug free, air-conditioned rooms with cable TV, mini bar, King-size beds and a nice decorum. The resort boasts two swimming pools, an excellent restaurant and is situated next to Boracay's inexpensive and delightful market place. However, at 120 dollar per night (about 140,000 won), it was hardly attractive to the budget minded traveler.

On the other end of the spectrum though, I found lovely motels for only 900 pesos a night (about W 20,000) complete with air-conditioning, a quaint poolside bar; nice, modern rooms and a convenient shuttle bus service to the beach (about 1 km walk) included in the price. The only problem with the budget places are they usually don't have phones, websites or any serious advertising to speak of. So if you need that sense of security of booking well in advance, then the price will climb considerably for that luxury.

Getting there is the fun part. A land, sea, and air adventure is required to finally reach your cozy hideaway. Regular flights from Korea to Manila are operated by Korean Air, Asiana, Cebu Pacific Air (CEB), and Philippine Airlines. The advantages of Korean Air or Asiana are that you have morning departures which allow you enough time to transfer to the domestic carrier and arrive in Boracay on the same day.

Otherwise, an evening departure will require you to spend a night in Manila. Philippine carriers though are usually cheaper in cost and on Philippine Airlines I have consistently upgraded to business class (round-trip) for the last seven years for a measly extra 200,000 won max! You’re on vacation! Why not travel in style?

Once the traveler has boarded their domestic flight, they must make their way to the port of Caticlan on the main island of Aklan. From Caticlan you must pay a small fee of 1,000 won for your "port terminal tax" and another 500 won for your 20-minute boat ride to Boracay. Your domestic flight will either entail a trip to Kalibo (Philippine Airlines), a city two hours from Caticlan in which you must hire a bus or car to drive you to Caticlan along a scenic mountain road, or else you can fly directly on a smaller plane (Asian Spirit or Seair) to Caticlan airport directly, located about 500 meters from the sea port. Generally the flights are around 60,000 won each way.

Whatever route you choose, the whole trip is an adventure. The beach has never disappointed anyone and for someone who doesn't want to fly too far to find a good beach, Boracay is the best you can do. The friendly island will always welcome you with open arms and a smile as warm as the Boracay sun.

A visitor's guide to Boracay - Philippines

The Boracay Island in the Philippines is haven for me. Thinking about it takes me to cool crystal blue waters, fine white powdery sand, clear blue skies, warm breeze, a beautiful tan, gorgeous swim suits, souvenir shopping, night parties, fun water sports and deliciously fresh seafood. There is nothing like a splash in the beautiful beach of Boracay on a hot summer day.

To relive this wonderful experience and picture of Boracay, here are my smart budget recommendations for the future visitors of this island paradise:

1) When to come The ideal time to go to Boracay is from March until April although this is also the time when the beaches are so crowded since people are escaping from the heat of the summer sun in the city. It's also not bad to spend November to January in this paradise since there won't be as many people and the weather is still conducive for beach swimming or sun bathing.

2) How to get there From Manila, the Philippines capital, Boracay is about a one hour plane ride. There are a couple of airlines that fly to either Caticlan or Kalibo. Caticlan is a very small airport and can accommodate only small planes. The benefit in landing at Caticlan is you only need to wait an hour to get to Boracay. You will need to ride to the Port where a boat will take you to the Island of Boracay. If you choose to fly to the Kalibo airport, you will need to take about a 1.5 hours land ride to the port. Once you reach the Boracay island, you can take a tricycle that will take you to your resort or rent a van. My suggestion is to have your resort pick you up from the Boracay port so it's let of a hassle for you. Some resorts also offer packages that include airfare / transfers. Look at the prices and your options. I would rather use a resort package than go through a travel agent. Believe me you can save more in going directly to the resorts than going through a travel agent.

3) Where to stay There are so many hotels / resorts sprawling across the Boracay Island stretch. The island is divided into 3 areas: Station 1, 2 and 3. People say that station 1 houses the most exclusive and expensive resorts, station 2 has the middle class resorts and station 3 has the most affordable resorts. I've tried staying at a station 1 resort and I wasn't very happy being that our resort was not in the beach front. I've also tried staying at a station 3 resort and I enjoyed my stay there better since our resort was beach front and I don't really mind walking to station 1 to enjoy the finer sand in that area. If I were to give advice on which station to stay, I'd stay station won't matter, pick a resort that is in the beach front and has all the amenities you are looking for. If budget is a consideration, I'd say pick a hotel that's most affordable. Some people go to Boracay without a hotel booking and just search through the beach front resorts with all their luggage and backpacks. Since I am more of a planner, I'd opt to make my reservations in advance and try to shop online / make phone reservations.

4) What to bring Of course, a visit to this paradise will not be complete without enjoyment of the white sand and cool blue beach. Take the most comfortable swimming gear. People don't care whatever you are wearing. Some go on swimming on shorts and tanks. The more daring ladies wear bikini sets (you must remember that the Philippines is a Catholic country and a bit still conservative). Don't forget a sun block if you don't want to be burned by the sun or a good sun tan lotion if your goal is to bask in the sun and be a golden beauty.

5) Where / what to eat Along the stretch of the beach front, there are several choices of food and restaurants. But since you are on this island, it is advisable to try their fresh seafood. There are places that would let you order your sea food fresh and they would cook it right then and there after you pick them. I love seafood and this is heaven for me!

6) What to do Activities in Boracay are just unlimited. For the outdoorsy person, there's the water sports (scuba diving, kite boarding and skim boarding, etc). Of course, nothing beats just lounging under the sun or soaking in the Boracay beach waters. Shopping is also a favorite pastime among Filipinos. There are several souvenir shops all over the island now. If you are looking for great accessories, try station 3. There's a couple of locals in the area that sell accessories really cheap (way cheaper than what you think they would cost). I bought a freshwater pearl jewelry set (necklace, earring, bracelet) for just about $2.50. Know how to bargain also because that is the key! There's also an abundance of massage therapists, henna tattoo artists and hair braid kids along the beach front. It seems that a visit to Boracay can never be complete without a henna tattoo that just could cost a little less than a $1 (name your design). For first time Boracay visitors, it's a great idea to go island hopping. It takes about half a day and it's worth it. There are also other fun water activities for the entire family (ex. Banana Boat ride). At night, bars along the beach front open up. From time to time, there are also big concert events on the island.

I love traveling and seeing a lot of wonderful places, places where nature is beautiful and well preserved environment. I recently went home to my native country, the Philippines to visit friends and relatives. I haven't been home for so many years, but when I finally came back a lot of changes had happened.

Boracay is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and has been featured in so many travel magazines a place to see and enjoy. Boracay is just an hour away from my ancestral home. In the late 70's Boracay Island is only famous among the locals and Aklanons.

Now, Boracay is so well known not only to the local Filipinos but to a lot of tourists as well. Progress in tourism and economic development has been abundant because of investments from local and foreign investors. Locals from the neighboring places and others towns are getting jobs from those hotels, resorts and bars owned by both locals and foreigners companies. Tremendous progress and development has been achieved since the late 70's.

I only have one request to all, please make Boracay clean and preserve the corals so our next generation can still have a chance to enjoy to see this wonderful place, truly a gift from nature. I hope the Philippine Department of Tourism will do a lot more to preserve this wonderful and beautiful place.

The nearest airport to Boracay Island is in Caticlan, which is just a short boat ride away from the island. This airport is served by several airlines, most flying from Manila. One can also reach this island via boats operated by MBRS. These boats leave Manila's port for Caticlan either once or twice a week, depending on the season. Buses are also available regularly throughout the day from Cubao, Manila for Mindanao, passing Caticlan. The journey takes about 12 hours.

There are many good hotels offering different facilities to suit the requirement and comfort of tourists. Some of the beach front hotels even offer lounge chairs to relax and lounge around. Discovery Shores, Fridays, Seawind Resort, Patio Pacific, Boracay Mandarin, Tides etc. are some of the good hotels in Boracay.
